What is a Facility Code?
Basically, the facility code is an additional number that is encoded on the credential. The facility code and the credential
number are read together and treated as one number. When these two numbers are combined together, they form a unique
combination that is more secure than just the credential number alone. Facility codes are generally associated with 'batches'
of cards. When you buy a ‘batch’ of access control cards, those cards are programmed with a badge number range (say 1 – 500).
They also have a facility code programmed that is the same on every card in that batch. The code will generally be written on
a label attached to the box that your cards were shipped in. Some card types have a spec sheet inserted inside the box that has
the facility code on it.
Where is the Facility Code?
- Look on the credential that was recently purchased
- Look on the label on the recent box of credentials purchased
- Look in the access control software for your community
What happens if two companies share the same card numbers?
They could access each other premises. To reduce this risk, a second number, known as the facility or site code is encoded
into each card. Here is an example: Community A has cards numbered from 1 to 1000, with facility code 210, they would be
programmed as follows: 210–00001 up to 210–01000.
Community B could have the card numbers (1 to 10000), but with facility code 180, so their cards would be programmed as
follows: 150–00001 up to 150–01000.
To grant access, an access control system validates the facility keycard code AND the serial number. Community A will
reject Community B cards, and viceversa, even if they have the same card number, because the facility code does not match.
